The Challenges That Railway Multi-service Bearer Network Faced

Rail height info management makes the communication requirement between different level OCCs and stations surge. Only to current statistics, the nearest railway multi-service bearer network carrying more than 40 kinds of services. Complex and diverse business brings criteria requirements to multi-service bearer network:


  • Multi-service needs a variety of access methods;

Huawei Railway Multi-Service Bearer Solution

Railway multi-service bearer network is a important infrastructure for railway information system to protect the security, improve the transport capability and management efficiency of railway. The general thought of building Huawei rail service bearer network is shown in Figure 2:


  • Stations: OSN series of optical transmission equipment and various types of routers, switches will deploy to realize direct access for various types of business in the stations. Meanwhile, the convergence and backbone layer transmission equipments will support the interconnection between different stations and OCC in different countries or regions.
  • Track side: The low-end OSN device fulfill the access requirements of the base stations, video surveillance and interval stations along the track. With 1 +1 protection ring network, the disaster recovery capability will be significantly improved;
  • High-speed rail: Deploy relatively intensive access points to support the GSM-R base stations;

Remote station: 2 to 3 access rings to ensure sufficient capacity to assure the access of business.

Railway Multi-Service Bearer Network—Transmission Network

Huawei transmission bearer network can be applied to different network layers, and can be stratified based on network and development needs, carried out in stages as shown in Figure 3.


First, design unified transmission network architecture to fulfill different level OCC or railway administration communication requirements according to security requirements of business, the reliability and QoS guarantee perspective for the whole network, and the smooth evolution to IP networks to support rail data business development. Second, using OTN-ASON technology in different state or region communication, it can significantly improve reliability; simplify operation and maintenance complexity relative to the traditional WDM equipment. Again, use MSTP/ASON, DWDM guard ring to replace with the adjacent line to provide important business redundant capacity under many times failure and enhanced reliability and security of the business. Finally, based on the MSTP+ bearer network, realize IP data bearing to support the development of railway data services.

This solution brings following technical highlights:


  • Mainline station composed of 1 +1 linear multiplex section protection ring, the station along the road set nodes form 1+1 linear multiplex section protection ring with the main trunk nodes, achieve business access and converge.
  • The station nodes along the road form one or more of the multiplex section protection ring with the access nodes between the stations to protect the access of business.
  • Mainline nodes connect with backbone network to provide completely independent inter-network protection route for the business along the road to provide an effective solution to prevent a single point failure problem.

Multi-Service Bearer Network Solution—Data Network

According to business needs, Huawei data bearer network divided into a three-tier structure: the core layer, convergence layer and access layer, as shown in Figure 4:


  • As a core part of the dedicated data network, the core layer need to achieve high-speed data forwarding, mainly composed of routers, three switches. The core layer nodes set up dual router, the use of GE port interconnection, mutual backup and load balancing. The core routers use Gigabit distribution of the switching core router equipment, and the core switching capacity is 128Gbps.
  • Convergence layer routers which implement the operation management compose of layer 3 switches, DSLAM equipments and other components, which DSLAM compatible with ADSL2 +, VDSL and other standard access. In access and convergence layer nodes, we set up single router and assure double uplink to the core layer node router; according to channel resources it also can consider lateral interconnection between the nodes.
  • The access layer among the railway station compose of access node routers, Layer 2 switches, DSLAM equipments, to realize multi-system access. And depending on the application, you can configure 16 to 20 loops as an option.

This solution brings following technical highlights:


  • Comprehensive data network mainly provide a unified access and WAN interconnection services, such as video surveillance, video conferencing, of PIS, OA office, etc. for the business systems which have nothing to do with railway operation and money;
  • District centers and the main stations along the road set two fiber optic interconnection core layer routers which connected with each other to achieve redundancy, and each layer router all connect with upper 2 router to improve network disaster recovery capabilities.

Smooth evolution to adapt to the all-IP development needs of the railway business: the Hybrid dual-core process Railway voice services, data services, to achieve efficient bearing of the rail business; without replacing the device, simply replace the broads, simple and easy operation to achieve a smooth evolution.
  • Unified network management system allows simple operation and maintenance: remote upgrade, maintenance, without on-site operations; cross-domain end-to-end service provisioning, skilled engineers and 15 seconds can finish the configuration of a business; quickly locate the fault from the signal flow graph (optical reddening) section, rapid troubleshooting; a network unified management of all transmission network products and datacom products, reduce operation and maintenance costs.
