As interactive TV, Internet video, and mobile video services boom, massive amounts of online videos emerge. A large number of over the top (OTT) service providers (SPs), such as Netflix and Hulu, have emerged to provide diversified IP video services for end users.

For telecom operators and radio & TV network operators, the emergence of OTT services has led to fewer subscribers and a decrease in revenue. Traditional networks usually use independent and closed systems such as the video on demand (VoD) system, mobile video system, and Internet video system, to support OTT content and various user equipment (UE). These closed systems cannot be adapted quickly to meet subscribers' requirements for diverse services. Therefore, it has become an imperative task for telecom and broadcast network operators to establish a systematized, standardized, and scalable platform. This platform must be able to implement multiple business models, such as business-to-customer (B2C), business-to-business (B2B), and OTT, to improve user experience and help operators find a better position in the media industry value chain.

Overview

Unified SmartCDN

The Huawei SmartCDN solution is a next generation content management and distribution network and designed to address this issue. The solution employs a unified and intelligent media network architecture applicable to multiple service scenarios, and support triple-play services with high-quality content. With SmartCDN's advanced content management and delivery technologies, telecom operators and broadcast network operators can achieve faster progress of service integration and innovation, and expand new services . The SmartCDN solution enables operators to evolve from mere network channel operators/cable service providers to Internet content/service operators, and develop new business models.

SmartCDN network topology diagram

The Huawei SmartCDN solution consists of the media control (MC), media storage (MS), media switch (MX), media management (MM), and network operation center (NOC).

  • MC: provides the intelligent routing function to implement load balancing for devices on the entire network.
  • MS: provides a large-capacity, highly reliable, and cost-effective storage capability, and provides content pre-processing and pre-distribution functions.
  • MX: caches and streams media content.
  • MM: provides a web-based user interface for service management, such as content ingest, content pre-processing, content pre-distribution, account management, and presents reports to help operators with business management.
  • NOC: provides functions, such as device management, software management, configuration management, monitoring, and security management to implement unified management of network devices.

Typical Applications

By deploying the SmartCDN, operators can explore the full potential of existing networks to maximize their investments on networks. The SmartCDN supports multiple business models such as B2C, B2B, and OTT. The SmartCDN has well-designed user/CP management mechanism and strong capabilities of extracting and analyzing network data, providing solid support for operators in improving their business operations.

The SmartCDN supports the following services:

  • Live broadcasting
  • VoD
  • TV on demand (TVOD)
  • Time shift TV (TSTV)
  • Network Personal Video Recording (nPVR)
  • Download acceleration
  • Web page acceleration
  • CP account management

Based in a unified architecture, the SmartCDN supports multiple services within one system, enabling services to share system resources. When service requirements change, the SmartCDN dynamically adjusts the system resource allocation, allowing operators to achieve smooth service transformation to better adapt to an ever-changing market. In terms of operation and maintenance (OM), the unified architecture enables operators to manage network elements (NEs) by using one OM system. This mechanism greatly increases the OM efficiency, and improves quality of service (QoS) and user loyalty.
