Huawei Desktop Cloud

Huawei desktop cloud is a cloud that complies with the definition of cloud computing. The desktop cloud enables users to access cross-platform applications and even the entire desktop through thin clients (TCs) or any other devices connected to the Internet. In other words, we can use a dedicated program or browser on TCs or any other devices connected to the Internet to access the desktop and various applications residing on a server. However, we enjoy the same experience as we use traditional PCs.



Basic structure of a desktop cloud


Compared with traditional PCs, the desktop cloud provides the following benefits:


(1)l Enabling users to access desktops anytime and anywhere


Users can access their desktops anytime and anywhere as long as a TC is available and the Internet is reachable.


(2)l Providing centralized management


Centralized management means managing virtual desktops in a centralized manner. Because all virtual desktops are deployed in the data center, one IT maintenance engineer can maintain much more virtual desktops by means of the centralized management.


(3)l Enhancing security


Security is a vital requirement for the office system. All the desktop cloud data is stored on the desktop cloud server and managed in a centralized mode. This greatly enhances the system security.


(4)l Being environmentally-friendly


The desktop cloud enables resource sharing using virtualization technologies. Compared with traditional PCs, the desktop cloud consumes fewer resources. Therefore, the desktop cloud is more environmentally-friendly.



Characteristics of the Huawei Desktop Cloud

Carrier-Grade Reliability

Huawei desktop cloud solution fully leverages Huawei's strengths in the carrier-grade reliability, which is signified in the following aspects:


(1)l Carrier-grade servers


All servers contained in the Huawei desktop cloud system are carrier-grade servers, including computing servers, storage servers, management servers, and network devices.


(2)l High availability (HA) software


Within the Huawei desktop cloud system, the management platform and the access session management platform use HA software that fully inherits the HA feature of Huawei telecommunications software. Software of this type provides a hot backup mechanism, ensuring reliability of the cloud software. As a result, VMs and virtual storage are highly available, virtual networks can be self-restored, and VM snapshots are also highly reliable.


(3)l Multi-level backup for data storage


The Huawei desktop cloud system uses a multi-level backup mechanism for data storage. A piece of data has multiple backups. Users can continue using the desktop cloud even when a storage device (such as a hard disk for data storage) is faulty.



Strong Security

Huawei desktop cloud system provides an end-to-end (E2E) cloud security solution that covers access terminals, transmission networks, and storage data to ensure strong security. The Huawei desktop cloud system provides the following security highlights:


(1)l No-storage design for cloud terminals


There is no writable storage device on Huawei desktop cloud terminals, and the external storage devices connected to the USB ports of Huawei desktop cloud terminals can be managed. This ensures security of the desktop cloud data.


(2)l Safe desktop transmission protocol


Huawei virtual desktops are operated by using safe and effective transmission protocols. An embedded secure shell (SSH) mechanism is also provided to ensure transmission security.


(3)l Uniform user authentication


Huawei desktop cloud system uses a uniform user authentication mechanism: using the dynamic digital certificate to authenticate users.


(4)l Region separation design on the server (including red area, yellow area, and green area)


Huawei desktop cloud solution supports region separation design (including red area, yellow area, and green area). These three areas are isolated and require restricted access rights. Different rights are set for different areas. Therefore, users can access only areas that are authorized for them. This strategy complies with security requirements.



E2E Desktop Cloud

Huawei desktop cloud solution is truly an E2E solution that contains detailed sub-solutions for software to hardware, terminal to background, operating system (OS) virtualization to application virtualization, and computing resources to storage resources. The Huawei E2E solution provides the following features:


(1)l Complete solution for terminals, hardware, software, and services


Huawei desktop cloud solution includes a complete set of sub-solutions. Each sub-solution is provided independently by Huawei.


Huawei desktop cloud terminals are of high security and reliability.


Huawei desktop cloud hardware includes servers, network devices, load balancers, and storage devices.


Huawei desktop cloud software includes cloud scheduling and management platform software, desktop cloud access and session control software, and desktop virtualization software.


The Huawei desktop cloud solution also provides rich application virtualization, which enables desktop users to easily benefit from various applications.


(2)l Series of terminals


The Huawei desktop cloud solution supports a series of certified cloud terminals, such as TCs, various handheld terminals, and software clients (SCs). Users can select any of the terminals to access the Huawei desktop cloud system.



Multi-Service Integration

Huawei desktop cloud system integrates multiple virtualization applications and also provides other featured applications, such as an information and communication technologies (ICT) integration scheme and an office automation (OA) integration scheme.


(1)l ICT integration


ICT integration means integrating the traditional voice service, network conference service, and video conference service to the Huawei desktop cloud solution. These traditional services can be enabled properly by using the Huawei desktop cloud system and user experience can also be ensured.


(2)l OA integration


OA integration means integrating the traditional email service, terminal security management (TSM) service, and document security management (DSM) service to the Huawei desktop cloud solution. The TSM service provides security protection and inspection software for virtual desktops. The DSM service provides security software to securely manage documents.



Consistent User Experience

Huawei desktop cloud solution provides rich quality of service (QoS) features, ensuring consistent user experience for users who have replaced their PCs with virtual desktops.


(1)l Huawei desktop cloud network adopts E2E QoS design, which maximally mitigates network delay and ensures consistent user experience.


(2)l Huawei desktop cloud system uses intelligent scheduling algorithms to schedule the entire system load. This helps balance system load and ensure good user experience.



Efficient Management and Maintenance

Huawei desktop cloud system provides efficient E2E management and maintenance by using a series of management and maintenance software and tools.


(1)l Web-based maintenance tool


By using Huawei web-based maintenance tool, users can directly log in to a virtual desktop from any PCs, instead of installing a client, to manage and maintain the desktop cloud system.


(2)l Rights-based and domain-based management


The desktop cloud maintenance and management system implements rights-based and domain-based management by defining various roles and assigning the roles different rights.


(3)l Automatic diagnosis and restoration tool


The desktop cloud management and maintenance system provides an automatic diagnosis tool for fault locating. When a fault has occurred, the system can automatically restore itself by implementing automatic system scheduling, VM self-restoration, and redundancy restoration of management nodes. If the automatic restoration fails, the system will report the fault to operation and maintenance (O&M) engineers.


(4)l Quick fault location by using a "black box"


Huawei desktop cloud solution provides a black box. The black box records last words for the system that helps O&M engineers quickly locate and rectify faults.


Shanghai Health Cloud

Summary

To respond to its "cloud computing industry base" initiatives, Shanghai Government chose Huawei to deploy a "health cloud" in Zhabei district, an exemplary informatization area designated by the Ministry of Health of China. As the first and initial "health cloud" in China this project integrated "healthcare cloud", "community health cloud" and "district-wide health cloud" services. After one month of implementation, its first phase was completed with the inter-hospitalizing @, electronic case history (ECH), and virtual desktop office services.



Shanghai Zhabei "Health Cloud"


@ Inter-hospitalizing is to transfer patients from community clinics to hospitals and vice versa, patients visit community clinics for ordinary illness but go to hospitals in case of a serious one.
