Service-Oriented, Professional O&M — U2000 Solution to the IP Domain

Network O&M is facing an unprecedented challenge brought about by the pressure accumulating from the rapid development of informational enterprise networks, steady growth of network sizes, and increasing complexity of VPN networks. Under the challenging circumstances, Huawei has launched the iManager U2000 Unified Network Management System (U2000 for short) to manage and maintain data communication devices such as switches and routers.
The U2000 provides varies network management functions including topology, configuration, resource, fault, performance, event, traffic, and report. It can help enterprise-level customers improve network stability and reliability, as well as achieve efficient, steady, and secure operation of core services so that customers can hold a leading position amongst fierce competitors.

Centralized Topology Monitoring

The U2000 supports unified topology discovery and network-wide monitoring for obtaining the running status of all NEs(network elements) in real time. It also provides efficient methods to modify network parameters according to specific network conditions, thereby ensuring optimal performance for any network. Detailed topology monitoring functions are as follows:

  • Automatically discovers and dynamically refreshes topologies, allows topology customization, and displays topologies by area or subnet.
  • Allows users to access the associated NE Explorer by clicking an NE icon in the Main Topology.
  • Changes NE icon colors to notify users of network or NE status changes.
  • Performs scheduled polling on NEs, and refreshes and displays their status in topologies.
  • Supports NE filtering, only displaying required NEs.
  • Allows rapid topology object search, pinpointing topology objects in the navigation tree and Main Topology.

Accurate Fault Management

The U2000 can monitor running status of NEs in real time, detect faults, collect historical fault information, and offer troubleshooting suggestions. Detailed fault management functions are as follows:

  • Monitors faults in real time and notifies users of faults using audible and visual alarms.
  • Allows users to set alarm severities.
  • Masks repeated, transient, and engineering alarms, thereby reducing unnecessary alarms.
  • Reports alarms through emails and short messages.
  • Accumulates alarm handling information from experience for future reference.
  • Allows users to customize alarm query templates to quickly make alarm queries and generate resulting reports.
  • Supports dumping of historical alarms, saving storage space.
  • Associates alarms with services, allowing users to view the services affected by alarms, and the alarms related to services.

Visual Performance Management

Performance management is an important aspect of network management. The U2000 can monitor performance of large-scale IP networks by NE, link, path, and service. Detailed performance management functions are as follows:

  • Supports network performance management, collection of millions of performance indicators, and overall uninterrupted performance monitoring.
  • Monitors device performance, such as CPU and memory loads of devices and their boards.
  • Monitors usage of inbound and outbound traffic and bandwidth of links and interfaces, as well as usage of link resources.
  • Monitors the path running status in terms of delay, packet loss ratio, and jitter.
  • Provides TCAs and performance analysis reports, supporting trend analysis of historical performance data.
  • Supports management of performance collection tasks in GUIs.

Flexible Web Report Management

The iWeb report system of the U2000 uses the Browser/Server (B/S) structure and provides a set of flexible report application services, such as template-based report development and Web-based report generation, distribution, and management. Detailed report management functions are as follows:

  • Allows users with U2000 accounts to view performance images using Web browsers without having to install U2000 client software.
  • Supports report rights management, and reuses U2000 user names and passwords. Users can be assigned rights of report administrators, operators, or viewers.
  • Generates reports in automatic or manual mode.
  • Saves reports in multiple formats and displays data in charts and tables.

Cluster Management

The U2000 supports cluster management for networks where many low-end devices, such as Layer 2 switches, exist. On such a network, an NE with a public IP address is designated as the command switch for cluster management. Detailed cluster management functions are as follows:

  • Saves IP addresses.
  • Automatically discovers and dynamically refreshes cluster topologies.
  • Provides unified, centralized, and batch configuration management for a set of NEs.
  • Supports centralized maintenance and management of cluster NEs.
  • Allows easy backup and restoration of configuration data.

NE Configuration File Management

The U2000 features very efficient NE configuration file management. Network administrators must periodically back up NE configuration files and track NE configuration changes. If a network failure occurs, backup configurations can be used to restore NEs. Detailed functions of NE configuration file management are as follows:

  • Backs up and restores NE configuration files in batches.
  • Backs up NE configuration files after NE configurations are changed.
  • Supports flexible comparison of NE configuration files. For example, network administrators can compare NE operation configurations with NE startup configurations, or configuration files of different NEs to easily pinpoint configuration differences and determine configuration commands that commonly result in failures.

Visual VPN Service Management

The U2000 supports end-to-end visual VPN service management. Detailed VPN service management functions are as follows:

  • Provides hierarchical and visual network management, which relieves users from having to remember command lines.
  • Supports end-to-end visual VPN service provisioning and template-based service creation.
  • Allows graphical and visual batch NE configuration, which enables one service to be applied to multiple similar NEs.
