CloudEngine Series Data Center Switches

Huawei CloudEngine series switches are high-performance cloud switches designed for next-generation data centers and high-end campus networks. The series includes the flagship CloudEngine 12800 core switches, with the highest performance in the world and the CloudEngine 6800/5800 Top of Rack (TOR) switches for high density, high performance 10GE/GE access. The CloudEngine series uses Huawei's new software platform, VRP8, and supports extensive data center and campus network services.
The CloudEngine is a key component of Huawei’s Cloud Fabric solution for next-generation cloud-computing data centers. This solution combines CloudEngine series (CE for short) switches with transmission, routing, security and network management products, and is designed to help customers build a stable network architecture supporting business growth and development for the next 10 years.

CloudEngine 12800 Series

The CE12800 switches are high-performance core switches designed for data center networks and high-end campus networks.

They adopt an advanced hardware architecture design and have the highest performance of all currently available core switches. The CE12800 provides a maximum of 48Tbps switching capacity. Each switch has up to 96*100GE and 288*40GE ports or 1152*10GE ports.

The CE12800 switches use an industry-leading Clos architecture and a front-to-rear ventilation channel designed to provide industrial-grade reliability. They also provide comprehensive virtualization capabilities and comprehensive data center service features. Moreover, the CE12800 uses innovative energy-saving technologies to greatly reduce power consumption.

The CE12800 is available in three models: CE12812, CE12808, and CE12804. The whole series uses interchangeable components to reduce spare part costs. This design ensures device scalability, while protecting customers' investment.

CloudEngine 6800 Series

CE6800 switches provide high-density 10GE access in data centers and can also be used as core or aggregation switches in campus networks.

The CE6800 series adopts advanced hardware architecture, supports the highest density of 10GE access ports in the industry and provides 40GE uplink ports. These switches support a wide range of data center service features and a high stacking capability. In addition, air flow direction is changeable through ventilation channels (from front-to-rear or rear-to-front).

The CE6800 series has two models: the 48S4Q model providing 10GE optical access ports, and the 48T4Q model providing 10GE electrical access ports. Each switch has 48*10GE ports (optical or electrical) and 4*40GE QSFP+ ports (each QSFP+ port can be used as 4*10GE ports). These ports provide L2/L3 line-speed forwarding.

CloudEngine 5800 Series

The CE5800 switches provide high-density GE access in data centers and can also be used as aggregation or access switches in campus networks.

The CE5800 series adopts an advanced hardware architecture design, supports the highest density of GE access ports in the industry and is the first switch to provide 40GE uplink ports. CE5800 switches support a wide range of data center service features and a high stacking capability. In addition, air flow direction is changeable through ventilation channels (from front-to-rear or rear-to-front).

The CE5800 has 48 line-speed GE ports, 4*10GE SFP+ ports, and 2*40GE QSFP+ ports. These ports provide L2/L3 line-speed forwarding.

The CloudEngine switches help enterprises and carriers build and deploy a 360T non-blocking switching platform that provides access to tens of thousands of 10GE/GE servers. This platform provides three major advantages: scalable fabric virtualized fabric and converged fabric.

Scalable Fabric

Scalable network to support business growth and development for the next 10 years: CloudEngine switches can build a 360T non-blocking switching network that supports the evolution and deployment of four generations of servers (from GE/10GE to 40GE/100GE). With this non-blocking switching platform, customers do not need to frequently upgrade their networks to meet requirements for 40GE access, or even 100GE access.

Highest-performance core switch in the world: The CE12800 provides 2 Tbps bandwidth (unidirectional) per slot and a total of 48Tbps switching capacity. It supports various high-speed line cards including 8*100GE, 24*40GE and 96*10GE line cards. One switch can provide a maximum of 96*100GE and 288*40GE line-speed ports or 1152*10GE line-speed ports. The capacity and port density make the CE12800 an industry leader.

40GE uplink ports on the whole series of TOR switches: The CE6800 and CE5800 provide a super high density of 10GE and GE access ports. The whole CE6800/5800 series also provide 40GE uplink ports, with the highest forwarding performance in the industry.

Non-blocking Clos architecture: CE12800 core switches use a non-blocking Clos architecture and dynamic distributed buffering technology (100 ms per port). These technologies can handle incast traffic resulting from cloud-computing applications such as search service and parallel computing, ensuring zero packet loss..

Highly reliable redundancy design: The CloudEngine series has a high reliability design that ensures nonstop operation. All the key components of the CE12800, including the main control units, switch fabric units, power modules and fans, work in a redundant mode. CE6800/5800 switches also have hot swappable power modules and fans that work in redundant mode.

Front-to-rear ventilation channel design: The whole CloudEngine series uses a front-to-rear ventilation channel design, which is the most appropriate for data center equipment rooms. This design separates cold air flows from hot air flows to improve heat dissipation efficiency.

Virtualized Fabric

Comprehensive network virtualization capabilities: 1. The CloudEngine series uses Virtual System (VS) and Cluster Switch System/intelligent Stack (CSS/iStack) technologies to flexibly adjust network boundaries, thereby meeting requirements for network virtualization. 2. The CloudEngine series uses Transparent Interconnection of Lots of Links (TRILL) and nCenter technologies to support service virtualization and server virtualization.

VS for on-demand resource sharing: The CE12800 uses VS technology to provide an industry-leading virtualization capability of 1:8. One switch can be virtualized into a maximum of eight logical switches, allowing one core switch to manage services of different areas (such as the production area, office area, and Internet DMZ) or multiple tenants. VS technology improves device usage efficiency and reduces the costs of network construction while maintaining high security.

CSS/iStack to simplify network management: The whole CloudEngine series supports CSS/iStack, which can virtualize multiple physical switches into one logical switch to simplify network management and improve network reliability. The CE12800 series has an industry-leading clustering capability and four CE12800 core switches can form a cluster. The CE6800/5800 series supports a large stack of up to 16 switches.

Synergy of Innovative CSS+VS technology: The CE12800 combines CSS and VS technologies to turn a network into a resource pool so that network resources can be allocated on demand. This on-demand resource allocation is perfect for the cloud-computing service model.

Large-scale routing bridge to support flexible service deployment: All CloudEngine series switches support TRILL, a standard IETF protocol. The TRILL protocol helps to build a large Layer 2 network with more than 500 nodes, which allows flexible service deployments and large scale VM migrations. 10GE/GE servers can also be used on a TRILL network.

nCenter to allow auto migration of VMs: nCenter is an automated management system for virtualized data centers. It automatically delivers network configurations to devices when VMs migrate. Additionally, nCenter provides high-speed RADIUS interfaces to improve the VM migration speed by 10–20 times above the industry average.

Converged Fabric

Converged network to reduce TCO: The CloudEngine series supports Fiber Channel over Ethernet (FCoE). This technology allows storage, data and computing services to be consolidated onto one network, reducing the cost of network construction and maintenance.

Centralized FC gateway deployment to facilitate Operation and Management: In centralized FC gateway deployments, the Ethernet network is compatible with the FC SAN network, but Ethernet access devices do not participate in computing the FC protocol. This deployment makes network operation and management simpler.

Low latency and zero packet loss: The CloudEngine series supports Data Center Bridging (DCB) to ensure low latency and zero packet loss for the FC storage service and high-speed computing service.
