After spending over 20 years in the communications technology (CT) industry, Huawei has finally climbed to its summit. With coming rapid development in the CT field, Huawei has adopted cloud computing as its strategy backing its transformation into an information communications technology (ICT) provider with views set on future growth and advancements.


In practice, Huawei has deployed a commercial desktop cloud network currently serving its own employees across the globe, pioneering a change in the IT architecture while optimizing its own FusionCloud desktop solution.



IT Maintenance Problems Facing Huawei


With rapid service expansion, the traditional IT architecture is faced with a variety of problems, such as complex architecture, poor service continuity, and low end-to-end (E2E) efficiency.


Moreover, traditional PCs have the following disadvantages:


  • High hardware cost: The short three-to-five-year life cycle of a traditional PC creates large costs regarding hardware replacement.
  • High power consumption: A traditional PC consumes about 200 W of power. This brings about unavoidably high energy costs for enterprises with a large PC hardware base.
  • High information security cost: Data on traditional PCs is saved on each single desktop. Accordingly, the cost on information control is high for all the location-dispersed PCs.
  • Environmental pollution: Traditional PCs generate great amounts of heat, radiation, and noise, polluting the office environment while affecting work enthusiasm and efficiency.
  • Long service recovery duration: Traditional PCs have very high fault rates creating the possibility of service interruption whenever a hardware, OS, or software fault occurs. Service recovery takes a long time, partly because maintenance personnel need to arrive on site to rectify problems. With such low maintenance efficiency, a maintenance engineer can maintain only about 100 PCs on a project basis.
  • Complicated management and maintenance: A traditional PC environment may involve multiple independent service systems, which have their own rights, software, and security management mechanisms. Therefore, the IT system management and maintenance is complicated.


Introduction to Huawei Desktop Cloud Project


Huawei is currently home to the largest internal desktop cloud system in the world.


The desktop cloud system well protects Huawei's intellectual property, reduces internal management and maintenance cost, improves the office environment, and increases the employee management and working efficiency. These are all benefits to Huawei brought by desktop cloud.


With successful world wide applications of Huawei's internal desktop cloud, Huawei has accumulated rich experience in large-scale deployment and O&M of desktop cloud networks. Apart from this, the existing market status enables Huawei to lead the exploration for a mature business model among its peer vendors.


Desktop cloud has the following advantages:


Enhanced Information Security


The data is migrated from PCs to a cloud data center. This prevents the entire system from being affected by attacks to individual PCs, protecting Huawei's core technology assets against information leaks.


To ensure data security, Huawei has set up three security levels for its office zones: red, yellow, and green. Red zones have the highest information security requirements, yellow zones are confidential zones, and green zones are common office areas. Data produced in these zones are isolated from each other ensuring information security.


High Work Efficiency


When compared to the traditional-PC-based office systems, desktop cloud has helped Huawei reduce investments by 40% and the power consumption by 73%, while increasing device CPU usage from 5% to 60%.


The office equipment deployment period has been shortened from 3 months to 1 week. The required number of IT maintenance engineers has been reduced while maintenance efficiency is greatly improved. With desktop cloud, each maintenance engineer can provide IT services for about 1000 users on the basis of a project.


In the past, a new employee needed to spend at least half a day applying for and configuring a desktop PC. Now with desktop cloud, a new employee can be assigned a VM and made ready for work within 10 minutes.



Environment Friendly


A TC consumes less than 8 W of power, bringing the end-to-end power consumption down to a mere 35 W, which is considerably far less than the 200 W footprint left by a traditional PC. In addition, TCs produce little noise and radiation, creating a very green and environmentally friendly work environment.


Within Huawei, offices are almost completely free of noise produced by desktop terminals. The original big desktop PC hosts have been replaced by smart-shaped TCs. Users can now log in to their own VMs from any TC, and then, start work at any time and place.
