Huawei FusionCloud Desktop Solution Building a Continuously Improving Enterprise ICT System

The Huawei FusionCloud Desktop solution focuses on solving the challenges of the traditional PC model, such as office efficiency, operation and maintenance management and information security. This solution virtualizes and centralizes the computing and storage resources (including CPU, hard drive, and memory) of PCs into the data center, creating a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI). With VDI, end users can access their own "virtual PCs" using thin clients (TCs), personally-owned computers and mobile devices, while still allowing the enterprise to maintain information security and high service reliability.

As fierce competition between enterprises keeps escalating, CIOs and CTOs need to consider the following issues:

  • How to protect the security of company assets
  • How to implement easy and efficient IT management
  • How to quickly apply innovations
  • How to control costs effectively

As an enterprise's most common but highly important office appliance, traditional desktop computers face the following challenges:

  • Prone to information leakage and low system security
  • Difficult to manage, troublesome to maintain, and inefficient
  • Low resource usage, complicated system stacking, and low return on investment (ROI)
  • High energy consumption, high carbon footprint, high operating cost, and difficult to add more benefits to enterprises and society

Therefore, enterprises must find a flexible infrastructure to tackle the supply-demand imbalance between IT resources and information security. The desktop cloud is just such a product. It employs the most up-to-date cloud computing philosophies and technologies to drive innovation in IT infrastructure.

The HUAWEI Desktop Cloud is an end-to-end integrated virtual desktop solution. This solution deploys the computing and storage resources of desktop computers in a cloud computing data center, including CPUs, hard disks, and memory, and converts their physical resources into virtual resources using virtualization technology. These virtual resources are then combined into virtual machines of various specifications which are then used to provide virtual desktop service.

The HUAWEI Desktop Cloud Solution is applicable to various scenarios: ordinary office work, over-the-counter (OTC) transactions, branch offices, call centers, and research and development (R&D) facilities, to name a few. Moreover, this solution can be customized to satisfy the specific needs of different industries.

For small-sized enterprises, Huawei offers a cost-effective pre-integrated solution to enable quick deployment. This solution supports up to 100 virtual desktops using 1 to 2 servers..

For medium-sized enterprises that have branches, Huawei offers the all-in-one solution to enable quick deployment and easy operation and maintenance (O&M). This solution supports up to 2,000 virtual desktops by a set of FusionAccess. FusionManager centrally manages multiple sets of FusionCube, and therefore a maximum of 20,000 users are supported.

For large-scale commercial deployment, Huawei offers a highly reliable standard desktop solution which supports heterogeneous hardware and up to 20,000 virtual desktops by a set of FusionAccess.

Huawei has the most complete series of servers, cloud terminals, and storage, data communication, network, and security equipment in the industry. By exploiting its advantages in hardware, by incorporating its proprietary FusionSphere cloud operating system, and by utilizing its FusionManager cloud management software, the HUAWEI Desktop Cloud Solution covers cloud terminals, cloud hardware, cloud software, network and security, and consulting and integration design services to deliver an end-to-end integrated solution to customers. To date, the HUAWEI Desktop Cloud Solution has been installed by nearly 260 customers including governments, telecom carriers, large enterprises, healthcare entities, educational and financial institutions, and other industries in 42 countries. More than 200,000 desktop cloud users have been served.

All-Round Security Design, Protecting Enterprises' Intellectual Assets

The HUAWEI Desktop Cloud Solution uses the device-pipe-cloud architecture. This design provides access-side security, network security, cloud platform security, data security, and management security. The multi-layer security design focuses on prevention and employs monitoring and auditing as supplements to comprehensively protect enterprise information. This information security mechanism leaves no chance for security issues to arise.

The all-around security design incorporates the following features:

  • Access-side security includes terminal security management, centralized management of peripherals and interfaces, flexible access policies, delicate interface usage control, user fingerprints, USB key multi-factor identity authentication, sub-channel transfer, and encrypted data transfer.
  • Data security includes passwords not kept in terminals, full-disk encryption for mission-critical data to prevent unauthorized access, traceless data processing, and data erasure technology.
  • Cloud platform security includes distributed data storage, automatic backup and recovery, incremental snapshot, and fast backup (second-level).
  • Management security includes Virtual Desktop Rights- and Domain-based Management, Separation of Roles, intellectual user behavior auditing, automatic writing and video recording of administrators' operation logs for future auditing and tracing, file permission control system for flexibly configuring file permission rules in a secure and efficient manner.

In addition, Huawei also delivers with its virtual desktop solution a security management platform that monitors the security of thin client (TC) hardware, virtual machine systems, and user behavior. Administrative functions including centralized software and patch distribution, and asset management are also delivered.

One-Click Installation, Process-Based Delivery, and Automated O&M, Improving Maintenance Efficiency by Four Times

The HUAWEI Desktop Cloud Solution provides web-based remote and centralized O&M with automated policy-based control. This enables enterprises to build a desktop platform that is easy to deploy, manage, operate, maintain, and expand. Huawei's virtualization management platform implements unified management of services such as virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), and application and server virtualization. This platform enables enterprises to centrally manage and schedule physical and virtual resources using a single user interface, facilitating the O&M of virtualization platforms. Moreover, Huawei offers the black box, one-click desktop experience optimization tool, and automated data migration tool to significantly increase maintenance efficiency and decrease maintenance complexity. The HUAWEI Desktop Cloud Solution has passed over 30 verification tests, such as the concurrency test where 10,000 login attempts are initiated in five minutes; system reliability tests including the failback and IP QoS tests; the internal office test; and the security auditing test. With proven advantages in large-scale commercial deployments, this solution can deliver comprehensive professional services including planning and design, integrated delivery, project acceptance, and the best warranty in the industry.

Engineering Optimization Based on Large-Scale Delivery Experiences, Ensuring Experience Consistency

During its development and deployment, the HUAWEI Desktop Cloud Solution has undergone performance optimization and hardware improvement oriented toward services such as office automation (OA), high-definition (HD) videos, and high-performance graphics. By employing multimedia redirection , GPU pass-through and GPU Sharing technologies, this solution presents users with the same experience as PC desktops. The HUAWEI Desktop Cloud Solution supports transparent service migration, notable service consistency, and wide access to more than 100 peripherals. In addition, the solution uses the advanced SC-split architecture to deliver HD quality voice over IP (VoIP), with a two-way delay of less than 500 ms and the perceptual evaluation of speech quality (PESQ) mean value of 3.4.

Fast Implementation of Mobile Office without Changing Application Systems

The HUAWEI Desktop Cloud Solution uses a centralized delivery methodology to allow mobile terminals to access existing office systems smoothly and securely without changing systems. Desktop and application virtualization technologies eliminate data from mobile terminals and drive security control to a higher level by working with mobile device management (MDM).
